Acupuncture is based on the premise that the Qi moves along channels in the body called meridians. During an acupuncture session, fine sterile needles are gently inserted into specific points along the energy lines (meridians). This process is relatively painless for most people. Once the needle is in place, another sensation may arise, which can be described as warmth, heaviness, slight ache, tingling or numbness, and indicates the awakening of the flow of Qi at the needle site. Usually needles are retained for 20 – 40 minutes. Many people report feeling deeply relaxed and elevated in spirit after the session.
Herbal Medicine is a powerful ancient method of healing. Chinese herbs treat both the symptom of the illness and the underlying root of the disharmony according to the individual diagnosis. Chinese herbs are usually combined into formulas to enhance their properties and actions. The formulas can be custom made or your herbalist can prescribe a quality patent formula, when appropriate. Herb selection should always be done by a licensed qualified practitioner.
Shiatsu is a form of acupressure bodywork, which was developed in Japan about 100 years ago. It utilizes the same system of meridians or energy channels as Chinese acupuncture. The technique of Shiatsu involves comfortable pressure applied to points along these meridians, combined with gentle stretches and movement in order to facilitate and balance the flow of vital energy in the body.
Other Methods employed by a Traditional Chinese medicine practitioner may include: cupping, moxibustion / heat therapy, specific exercise suggestions and nutritional counseling.
